Having a new puppy can really throw your life for a loop! Adding a new puppy member to your family is so rewarding.

It’s going to take more patience than you think you need!

Socialization, introductions to their home environment, potty training, and just living with a pup in general takes a lot of time and energy. Remember it’s all worth it!

At the beginning of each week, set your goals for socialization and training.

Remember, just a couple minutes of training is enough for a puppy’s baby brain. Focus on quality over quantity for socialization, too.

Research!

Research where you’re getting your pup, the leash laws to ensure your pup has safe places to explore without being bombarded by other dogs off leash, and where you can take your pup for safe, quality socialization.

Don’t play the comparison game!

Every puppy is different and moves at their own pace. Every breed type has different needs, intelligence levels, sociability, etc. Do your research to find the pup that best fits your lifestyle. Keep track of your success and you’ll see your pup is a shining star.

Start teaching your pup about being handled and examined

If you’re getting a young pup, they’ll be at the vet every couple of weeks for their vaccines. Practice reaching for, touching, and handling your pup so they see it as a good thing and they’re comfortable the actions. Look for a Fear Free Certified Vet Clinic here!

Before the pup even comes home, set yourself up for success!

Pick up rugs, cords, and houseplants. Utilize gates and puppy pens to keep your pup safe and prevent any bad habits from forming. Set up their space for sleeping and resting in a quiet room. Plan where you’ll take them out for potty breaks and find good spots for socialization and decompression.

Give your pup time to rest!

So many behaviors like nipping, biting, frustration barking, and jumping are usually signs your pup needs a nap. Use white noise or quiet music, a cool and cozy space, and time alone to help your pup relax and recharge. Puppies need anywhere from 10-20 hours of sleep every single day. Remember, they’re babies that are growing and developing at an astonishing rate.

Most of all, have fun! This stage doesn’t last forever and take in every minute of it.
